Behind the Scenes
This verse falls toward the end of a passage in John where Jesus is foretelling His death. He explains to the disciples that He will be leaving them but that He will send a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide them and teach them and help them remember all He has taught them.
The disciples are anxious, not understanding what could happen to take Jesus away from them. They don’t see the whole picture yet, but Jesus does. So, He is preparing them. He is making provisions for them that they don’t yet understand.
I love this about our God. He cares for all the details and thinks of our needs. He doesn’t just go about His will, leaving us to fend for ourselves. Instead, He thinks of every detail and possibility. He plans for our protection and our welfare. His will is our welfare!
Here Jesus is assuring the disciples that He is not planning to abandon them. I can imagine that after walking so long with Jesus, going where He went and doing all He commanded, the idea of Him leaving may have felt frightening and overwhelming. But Jesus promises to send them the Holy Spirit. What a gift!
Make it Real
But this gift was not just reserved for the disciples. It is a gift that has been passed down to each and every believer since. As modern-day believers, I think we often take this gift for granted. We forget what a blessing it is to have a member of the Trinity living inside us. We forget that this is not the way it has always been.
See, before the Holy Spirit came in Acts 2, holy men and women of God were without this divine guidance on a regular basis. The Spirit would fall on people only selectively, they would be filled for a time, and then He would depart, leaving them. This is what David refers to in Psalm 51:11 when he is repenting to the Lord and begging Him not to take the Holy Spirit away from Him. See, the indwelling of God’s spirit in the lives of God’s people was not a regular or a permanent thing.
But the death and resurrection of Christ has bridged the gap between us and God, allowing the Holy Spirit to take up permanent residence inside each believer, sealing them for the day of redemption. What a beautiful thing!!!
So, the next time you are struggling to remember, to follow, or to understand, remember that you have been given a gift that far outweighs anything this world could throw your way. You have a piece of the divine always by your side, guiding you and showing you the way. When we struggle, we never struggle alone. When we mourn, we never mourn alone. When we rejoice, when we sing, when we laugh, when we praise… we are never alone. God literally walks through every high and low with us, by our side, helping us through each and every moment. Our job is to surrender to that help, to welcome it, and to seek it. He is faithful, He is near. We need only to reach out.

End in Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that for giving me the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide me and help me remember all You have taught. Help me to see that I am never alone. Help me to see that no matter what comes my way, You are always there with me.
In Jesus Name
Amen
