“And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Mark 4:39-41

The Storm...

Imagine that you’re on a boat.  Sun kissed cheeks, sparkling waters, and fat fish visible just beneath the surface.  Paradise.  And then, unexpectedly, skies change quickly, and things turn awry.  Two-foot swells begin rocking the boat, causing nervous laughter as skies darken.  Three-foot swells have you hanging on the side of the boat, and now you’re looking at everyone else’s face, curious if they mirror your fear.  Waves exponentially grow larger, lapping into the boat…worst nightmare situation.  There’s not much time left. Survival instincts kick into gear, and you’re tying things down. It takes three of you to steer directly into the swells to stay afloat.  Salty pellets sting your eyes, and your eyes are glued to swells large enough to capsize the boat at any given time.

While everyone is working tirelessly to get through this storm, someone is still sleeping.  That someone is the one who’s idea this trip was in the first place, and he is aggravatingly sleeping peacefully in the stern.

I love the subtle humor within these passages.  It makes me feel like my humor is not lost on Him.  Jesus, the One who is supposed to be our Rescuer, Savior, Comforter, is snoozing peacefully.  I wonder what He might have been dreaming amidst the fretting.

It was Jesus’ instruction to get on the boat after all, and you can hear the abandonment in the disciple’s voice when He’s woken up.   “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” A disciple asks him.  It’s what we have often asked, haven’t we?  “Can you see that I’m drowning?”

The Calming...

Jesus lifted His head from the padded cushion, stood up, stared into the lapping waves and said, “Quiet! Be still!” The waves calm, the boat is now rocking gently, and the sun plays peekaboo through the clouds again.

I don’t know about you, but this makes me involuntarily giggle because I see this storm play out in my own life again on the daily.  I feel like I’m drowning, and I do everything in my power to calm it down.  My heart grows anxious as a result, and I’ve cried out to God, “Are you there?  Do you see that I am struggling?”  And I just imagine him standing up and saying, “Quiet!” to my fears.  “Be still!” to my heart, and it being so.  We make it complex, but it really is simple.

I love the verse “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”  So often in my life, I look back and wondered where God was, but I hadn’t called out to Him.  I have noticed a pattern that when I called to Him, He answered prayers in a way that astound me.  But oftentimes, we just wait for him to do something without asking him, don’t we?  We’re swept up in torrential waters, hopeful yet doubtful that He will rescue us, and when He doesn’t, we can’t understand. Yet, He wants us to call to Him, and He wants us to trust Him. He wants to calm our storm.

If you feel like the waves are closing in on you today, I encourage you to close your eyes, be still, and call to Him.  He waits for us, and He longs to quiet our storm, but we first must let Him.

We are in this together!

Much Love!

End in Prayer

Jesus,

Thank You that You are always bigger than the storms of my life. Please help me to draw near to You and rely on You to calm the storm. I can’t do it on my own. Please help me to rely on You in every season, in every storm, and in every journey.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen!
